The New England Revolution announced today that they have signed (on loan with an option to buy) Luis Alberto Caicedo, a 21 year old midfielder from the Colombian second division side Cortulua. Caicedo…
(I’ve already lost interest)
(I feel like we’ve been down this road before)
Caicedo played briefly- as in, for 18 minutes- in Portugal for Sporting CP’s “B” side when he was a teenager and has since then played for Cortulua. He has been a regular starter for the club for the past few seasons, but they were recently relegated so take that for what it’s worth. Caicedo has also never been part- as far as I can tell- of any Colombian age group national side.
Call me “crazy” (or a Revolution supporter, it’s the same thing at this point), but this signing positively reeks of Mike Burns and Brian Bilello, rather than of Brad Friedel. If this is the player that Friedel’s “connections” from 20 years and 600+ matches in England are going to bring us, we’re in big trouble. Burns had this to say about the signing-
“We are pleased to add a young player in Luis who displays significant potential at the midfield position. We believe Luis will help strengthen our central midfield and add to the competition at the position.”
One, we don’t need “significant potential,” we need players who can help the club now. Two, we all know this is a prelude to trading Lee Nguyen for a couple of Pugg goals and a bag of practice balls and it’s not enough. Three, what ever happened to Kelyn Rowe? Four, I’m not going to mention any names,* but I feel like he’s said the same thing about a slew of players signed from Colombia who could kindly be called complete busts.
Everything’s fine, though, there’s another signing coming soon!
*Fernando Cardenas, John Lozano, Jose Moreno, etc.
