I’m really not taking much of a gamble.
It is 7:30pm on Wednesday night and the Major League Soccer transfer window closes in a few hours. Yet, I am so confident that the New England Revolution will do nothing before the window closes that I am writing this now now and setting it to autopost tomorrow morning.
But wait, you might say, they signed defender Claude Dielna! Yes, yes they did. According to the club he will not even begin to train until today (Thursday), which means he’s not likely to play this weekend against Vancouver. That means- at most- he’s going to play about one third of the 2017 schedule. Am I being overly pessimistic to think that adding a journeyman (sorry, I’m not going to pretend he’s anything but that) for a third of the season is going to do anything to close the six point gap between the Revs and a playoff spot?
Maybe, but here are the club’s own words directly from MLS.com-
I’ll leave you with this: if, given his background of mediocrity, Dielna, “can come in and start or seriously compete for (a) starting spot out of the gate,” that tells you everything you need to know about the roster that Heaps, Burns, and Bilello have put together.
