I’m a shameless booster of any and all American footballers, so I may be going a bit overboard with this, but what do we think Christian Pulisic’s “ceiling” is? At 18 years old it’s pretty clear that he’s the best player on the USMNT (he has 7 goals in his first 15 international matches- if you’re counting) and well on his way to being the best USMNT player ever. On the club side, he’s well on his way to becoming one of the stars at Borussia Dortmund and in the Bundesliga in general. Also, think about this: based on the UEFA coefficient rankings Dortmund is the seventh best club in Europe. So, if he continues to improve, the only clubs above Dortmund that he might move to are PSG, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid. I don’t know of any American player who has been at any of these clubs and made any kind of impression. Something tells me Pulisic is going to change that, and sooner rather than later.
In other international news Ross County’s Liam Boyce started again for Northern Ireland in their World Cup qualifying match against Azerbaijan. The win keeps Northern Ireland firmly in second place (behind Germany) in Group C. In Group F action Slovenia defeated Malta with the New England Revolution’s Antonio Delamea going to full 90 for the victors. Slovenia’s victory moves them within a point of second place Slovakia.
Ross County signed their first new player of the close season giving a two year deal to Sean Kelly, most recently of AFC Wimbledon. The Glasgow-born defender began his career at St. Mirren (including a loan spell at East Stirlingshire) and has already played over 125 senior level matches and was part of the Scotland U21 set-up. Kelly is most likely a direct replacement for the recently departed Kenny van der Weg.
Remember Michael Fraser, the Ross County goalkeeper who was part of the First Division winning side in 2011-2012? Well, he played one more season (for Elgin City) after leaving County in 2014 and then he found a new gig (beyond being a fire fighter to pay the bills) and this time he’s scoring goals!
No, I cannot talk about the Scotland v. England match. It could have been one of Scotland’s most historic wins ever and given their qualification efforts a real boost…but…well, you know the rest.
