Odds & Ends: “Talon?!” Seriously?! Edition

Unknown

  • Ross County F.C. will face junior side Linlithgow Rose F.C. in the Scottish Cup round of 16 after they beat League One side Forfar Athletic F.C. in a replay yesterday.  The Rose have been one of the dominant junior clubs in Scotland over the past decade so although a comfortable County win should be expected, they’ll have to work for it.
  • Paul Quinn has officially re-signed with Ross County for another 18 months after leaving Aberdeen “by mutual consent.”  He will be available for selection for this weekend’s Scottish League Cup semi-final against Celtic.
  • The Los Angeles Galaxy finally- FINALLY- signed former England international Ashley Cole.  For the better part of a decade Cole was one of the best, if not the best, left back in the world.  More recently, he has only played in a handful of matches since leaving Chelsea for Roma, is 35 years old, and signed with MLS for non-Designated Player wages.  I don’t know about this move…
  • Peruvian national team coach Ricardo Gareca stated recently that he’d be interested in talking to New England Revolution defender Andrew Farrell about playing for Peru.  If that sounds odd remember that Farrell (and his missionary parents) lived in Peru for over a decade when he was young so, while there would be paperwork to be done, he would be eligible.  It’s pretty clear from Farrell’s response that he is flattered, but that he wants to play for the USMNT.  How ’bout it, Jurgen?
  • The Revolution have invited MLS journeyman/free agent John “Jeb” Brovsky to join them during the preseason.  Some Revolution pundits see this as something of a coup.  Pardon me if I don’t get all breathless over a player who managed only 12 starts for an 8th place team.  Also in camp for the Revs are former Fairfield University goalkeeper Matt Turner, and former Southern New Hampshire University defender Dominic Samuel.  Turner was one of the top goalkeepers in the U.S. during his last two seasons at Fairfield, leading the nation in save percentage as a junior and being among the clean sheet leaders during both seasons.
  • Still waiting for the Revolution to announce that big Designated Player signing…
  • NYRB and USMNT (ugh) defender Matt Miazga has reportedly left the USMNT January camp to fly to England and sign with Chelsea.  Let me say two things about that.  First, good riddance.  Second, Chelsea will be a perfect fit.  Maybe John Terry can mentor him.  Samuel was a multi-sport standout in his native Toronto before joining the SNHU Penmen- a perennial Division II powerhouse.
  • Landon Donovan and his wife Hannah Bartell have become first-time parents.  And named their child, “Talon.”  I don’t even…
