Some Brief New England Revolution Notes

  • With their last pick (#51 in the third round) of the MLS SuperDraft the Revolution selected forward Femi Hollinger-Janzen (try and fit that on the back of your shirt!) out of Indiana University.  As with their previous two picks, this one at least looks good on paper.  IU has a strong collegiate pedigree both as a program and as a producer of talent, they won a national championship while Hollinger-Janzen was there, and he was one of the top players on the team during his four years in Bloomington.  Hollinger-Janzen is a native of Benin who was adopted by American missionaries and raised in Indiana from the age of six and was the state’s “Gatorade Player of the Year” as a high school senior.  If part of that sounds familiar, current Revolution defender Andrew Farrell has a similar upbringing:  while he was born in the U.S. he was adopted by missionaries and spent the early part of his life in Peru.
  • According to Revolution president Brian Bilello the Revolution have signed a pre-contract agreement (meaning the player is likely in the last year of his contract with his current club) with a designated player and will reveal the details- like who it is!- over the coming weeks.  Bilello also said it was the first of several signings, which jibes with his recent statement that the club was looking to bring in 2-3 “top of the roster” players before the beginning of the season.  I don’t really know how to process this information.  Part of me says, “Well, their last DP signing was Jermaine Jones, so this is probably a big deal…maybe even a couple of big deals!”  But then there’s this nagging voice in my head that reminds me how excited the club was to sign Jerry Bengston (3 goals in 29 matches) and Milton Caraglio (3 goals in 12 matches)…
  • How’s that new soccer-specific stadium coming along?
