The new Scotland tops were revealed only moments ago and I am here to give you my immediate reactions to them- and probably later on a more nuanced look at them when the full kits are revealed. I’ll start with the home top (above).
I like it and depending on what the shorts and socks are, I may love it. First off, I’m always a sucker for tartan on a Scotland kit, be it the majority of the kit (ohh, that ’94-’96 was soo sweet!) or just the trim. I like the “macro” look of the tartan on this kit, I like the white shoulder and sleeves to break things up a bit, and, me being me, I like that the tartan is the only stylistic element on the top. As I always say, pick one thing, do it well, and be done with it.
Given FIFA’s new (and stupid) rules about international kits being predominantly one color I think it’s safe to say that the shorts will be blue (with the tartan motif), maybe with white panels on the sides to echo the shoulders and sleeves of the shirt. As for the socks, well, I’m guessing they’ll go with either mostly blue or mostly white, but I think something in a red or maroon would add a nice pop of color to an otherwise tame (in terms of color) kit.
Or, boil it all down to this: I’ll be buying at least the top!
UPDATE: Here’s the full kit. I was wrong about the shorts, but they’re fine. Boring, but fine. I think the only purpose they serve is to make the blue socks work with the rest of the kit. Would still like to have seen some red somewhere in the kit.
Here’s a close up of the shirt- LOVE IT!!
I’m going to try and not use the word “hate.” Instead I’ll say that I “strongly dislike” this top and the rest of the kit that I imagine goes with it. There are two reasons for my feelings. First, this is lazy. It’s basically the 2010-2011 Everton F.C. away kit (Google it, kids). Though this one is likely paired with pink shorts (yikes) and dark socks rather than the dark shorts and socks Everton wore, it’s the same. I believe “derivative” is the word I’m looking for. That’s not the worst part, though.
Number two is the worst part: Scotland have a history of great (in my opinion) kits featuring “Lord Rosebury’s colors” going all the way back to 1881. The problem is that this tone/shade is a step too far. I would call this “hot pink” as opposed “salmon” or “primrose.” The previous away kit featuring primrose (and gold and white) was a stunner. So good I bought the whole thing. Previous recent-ish use of this color also included the great mid-90s salmon/white/purple away kit (I have the shirt and socks) and the almost as good 1999-2000 away kit which had a salmon and navy top (which I own).
So, in the case of the away top/kit. Nae. Nae. A thousand times, nae.
They went with dark shorts and socks (still can’t tell if it’s blue or black), but it changes nothing about my previous opinion except that the design is even lazier.
