Odds & Ends: “Moral Victories” Are Still Losses Edition
I just can’t. If you want to read about Scotland almost getting a “result” against Germany after being brushed aside by Georgia in the previous match, you can go here. Can Scotland still qualify for EURO 2016 through the playoff system? Sure, but I wouldn’t go an buy plane tickets or anything just yet.
In other EURO 2016 news, congratulation to Iceland for making their first major tournament and condolences to Ross County’s Liam Boyce on Northern Ireland not progressing.
Also, congratulations to Ross County’s Jackson Irvine as Australia keep their World Cup 2018 qualification record perfect after beating Bangladesh and Tajikistan.
Speaking of Liam Boyce, he is currently joint-second in scoring in the Scottish Premiership. No joke, this is the first time I’ve ever looked at the goals leaders for the league and not had to click through to the second page before seeing the name of a County player. Progress!
The U.S.A. take on Brazil in an international friendly this evening at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. I’m a USMNT “homer” of the very worst kind and I still can’t see this going well after the middling performance the home side turned in against Peru a few days ago. I realize there have been a few additions to the U.S. roster since then (Bradley, Morris, etc.), but that’s just not going to be enough.
Current USMNT defender Tim Ream signed a four year deal with Fulham F.C., currently in 14th place in the English Championship. You can read a lot about the current state of the national team into that sentence if you wish to.
The Republic of Ireland debuted their new away kit this week. They shouldn’t have. They went on sale yesterday if you want to snatch one up!
Finally, my alma mater, Gilford High School is off to a 3-0 start in New Hampshire’s Division III. As 14 time state champions and holders of multiple national high school records anything but a 15th state title will be a disappointment. Go get ’em, Coach Pinkham!
