For years the supporters of Newcastle United F.C. have been voicing their displeasure with the “leadership” of owner Mike Ashley in various ways and recently they have decided to hit him where it counts- in the wallet. Ashley, who built his fortune as the founder of Sports Direct (a chain of sporting goods stores) has continued to enrich himself during his tenure as owner by selling United gear- particularly replica tops- in his stores and, in the opinion of many supporters, not using the profits wisely vis-a-vis the club. Many are also up in arms over the clubs kit sponsorship deal with payday lender Wonga. Well, cue “The Magpie Brand,” who are not only giving supporters a “replica alternative,” but who may also have designed a better top than any that the club have officially produced. Take a look at their shirt and their cause, here.
Speaking of people with lots of money… The Kraft Family, owners of the New England Revolution (and the New England Patriots) have hired Goldman Sachs to help them finance a soccer-specific stadium for the club- Goldman had previously assisted the Krafts in securing financing for Gillette Stadium. I say this with very tempered enthusiasm, but as the first “concrete” move I have ever seen regarding an SSS for the Revolution, I am beginning to think that it might actually happen and that it might happen within the next two or three years. Several sites in over near downtown Boston have been discussed in recent years, with the most recent being a site in South Boston which would have easy access to both I-93 and the MBTA’s Green Line.
If anyone other than Sebastian Giovinco gets a vote for MVP this year the league should shut itself down. The Atomic Ant is far and away the best player in the league right now.
Ross County F.C. have opted against offering a contract to Croatian striker Andres Keric, but manager Jim McIntyre has reiterated the club’s desire to sign another forward in the near future.
More proof that Joey Barton is a nutter/wanker: he wants to play for Celtic some day, but only if Rangers are back in the Premiership.
All I can say about this is that somebody needs to get slapped- and I LOVE sneakers!!
