A SLIGHT Change of Plans

It had been my intention to post a few words on the opening of Major League Soccer’s 20th season before I headed off on my vacation.  Instead I spent 6 hours last night in the emergency room of my local hospital in the aftermath of passing a kidney stone.  I do not recommend it.

How much did it hurt?  In March 2011 I had surgery for a sports hernia that was supposed to take 90 minutes but lasted for over three hours because of the severity of the damage.  After surgery I didn’t bother with the Percocet I was given and instead just iced the area on and off.  What can I say, my family is known for it’s high pain tolerance.

Last night, however, was a different matter altogether.  Last night I would have undergone a voluntary lobotomy if it would have even dulled the pain a little, never mind gotten rid of it completely.  Needless to say, within minutes of the “event” beginning I was on my way to the emergency room where I remained until 6:30 this morning.

All of which is a roundabout way of saying that I’ve had less than three hours of sleep in the last 36 hours and…yeah, there will be no MLS weekend wrap-up.

I’ll still have a few parting words for you tomorrow before I depart, but until then talk among yourselves.  I’ll give you a topic:

The Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, Roman, nor an empire.

I actually used that phrase on a term paper I wrote in 10th grade. Also, if they could find a way to make people pass kidney stones involuntarily, they’d never need other forms of torture again.
