Ross County F.C. today revealed that they have made their fourth signing of the January transfer window, 30 year old Lithuanian international Darvydas Šernas.  At this time the length and terms of the midfielder/forward are unclear.

Šernas began his career in Lithuania with FK Dainava Alytus (now known as FK Dainava) before moving on to FK Vêtra where he scored from 2002-2008, scoring 28 goals in 134 matches.  While at FK Vêtra he was part of three sides that were runners-up in the Lithuanian Cup, he made his Europa League debut, and earned his first cap for Lithuania.  After a brief stint (4 matches) in the Russian top tier with PFC Spartak Nalchik he spent two seasons in the Poland with RTS Widzew Lódz where he shined, scoring 30 goals in 68 matches and leading the club to promotion to the Polish top flight.  Šernas remained in the Ekstraklasa for two more seasons with Zaglebie Lubin, who were willing to pay €400,000 to get him.  While with Lubin he also had a very successful stint on loan in the Turkish premiership with Gaziantepspor where he scored 6 times in 16 matches.  His success in Turkey led to a permanent deal with Gaziantepspor, but he would only play in three matches before being loaned out to Perth Glory in Australia.  He returned to the Polish second division at the beginning of this season when he signed with Wigry Suwalki.

So, a bit of a journeyman, but one who has had success in leagues/with clubs at or above the level of the Scottish Premiership/Ross County, and one who has been successful as in international with a country that generally finds itself on even terms with Scotland (pre-Strachan Era at least!).  That being said, his last full season with a single club was in 2011-2012, he hasn’t been capped in over a year (meaning no participation in EURO 2016 qualification), and at his most recent club he had only started five matches in the first half of the season.  Some of his more recent travails could be down to injuries, bad luck, coaching changes, or what have you, but when it comes right down to it this is the kind of player that is available to County at the moment (and under the circumstances) so it’s worth taking a chance on him.
