Here is my only take on tonight’s MLS All-Star game: the fact that the New England Revolution’s Lee Nguyen was neither voted on nor select as a reserve is a travesty. I know the Revolution are a mess and that much of that mess has been self-inflicted, but this guy has been putting on the kind of show this year that could lead to his first USMNT call-up since 2007. He’s been doing this kind of stuff all year.
Prior to tonight’s festivities MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott dropped these beauties in an interview: MLS is really interested in the Sacramento market (and to a slightly lesser extent, Las Vegas, San Antonio, Austin, and Minneapolis), 24 clubs is the league’s goal, college soccer is considering a year long season and MLS supports it, MLS moving to the FIFA calendar is “not imminent,” and last but not least, on relegation and promotion, “I would say it never happens.” I may not like a lot of those answers but there seems to be a whole lot more truth-telling in this guy’s make-up that in Commissioner Don Garber’s.
New England Revolution president Brian Bilello tweeted this today: “For all our fans asking, we do have an incoming player announcement that we should be able to make in the next few days.” Hmm…let’s see, whose out there that used to be good but just isn’t any more, preferably somebody as good or worse than the recently departed Jerry Bengston…I’m going to say it’s Jason Scotland. He’s been a pro since he was 17, a former T&T international, has played for nine different teams in four different countries since he started in 1996, and while a productive striker in his prime, hasn’t played a full seasons since 2010/2011 and hasn’t has a great season since 2008/2009. Perfect!
You know who’d be a nice signing for the Revs since Louis van Gaal doesn’t seem to want him at Old Trafford? Chicharito.
Speaking of Manchester United… I’d wager that right now, in street clothes, 78 year old Ryan Giggs is still a better player than most of those in the club’s first team. Luis van Gaal might turn things around but I still think United will struggle to even get a sniff of the Europa League.
Celtic will sell goalkeeper Fraser Forster to Southampton if they crash out of the Champions League against Legia Warsaw. They did. Snerk.
USMNT midfielder Sacha Kljestan is set to leave R.S.C. Anderlecht in Belgium to return to MLS…to the L.A. Galaxy, because…MLS.
Howard Webb has retired after 25 years as a match official (and he’s only 43, do the math!) to take up a role at the technical director for the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited…what!?). That’s kind of disappointing. I was hoping I might hire him and Pierluigi Colina to take Baldomer Toledo into a locked room and “educate” him for a few hours. Oh well, best of luck to him!
Finally, I’m thinking about starting a Ross County supporters group, just not sure on what scale- state, region, country, continent? Thoughts?
