My Favorite Scottish Club Names

the_name_game-shirley_ellis

No reason for this post other than to combine my well-known love of words with my equally well-known love of football.  I especially love evocative words that when strung together form a mellifluous string that is pleasing to both the tongue and ear.  Also, whimsy.  These are in no particular order and if you know of another good one please do pass it along via the comments section.

  • Heart of Midlothian F.C.
  • Linlithgow Rose F.C.
  • Hamilton Academical F.C.
  • Greenock Morton F.C.
  • Queen of the South F.C.
  • Buckie Thistle F.C
  • Clachnacuddin F.C.
  • Forres Mechanics F.C.
  • Inverurie Loco Works F.C.
  • Gala Fairydean Rovers F.C.
  • Civil Service Strollers F.C.
  • Kirkintilloch Rob Roy F.C.
  • Shotts Bon Accord F.C.
  • Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic F.C.
  • Dundonald Bluebell F.C.

I find it interesting that only one comes from the Premiership (unless Hamilton defeat Hibernian in the playoffs and make it two), that only three others (two if Hamilton are promoted) come from league football, and the rest from the lower, regional leagues.  This makes me wonder whether, as clubs grow and/or move up the pyramid they have a tendency to gradually homogenize their club’s name in the hopes of making it more marketable?  Sounds like there’s a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation in their for some enterprising young football fan!
