The Rampant Young Lions

There is just no rest for the gluttonous today…

This evening brings news of the continued rejuvenation of the Scottish National Team program.  For some months now I have kept quiet about the slow but steady improvement of the Scottish youth level sides (male and female), all of which seem well on their way to once again “punching above their weight” in the arena of world football.  This by the way, is all I will ever ask of the senior national teams- make the big tournaments and put a little fear into the hearts and minds of your “bigger” and “better” opponents.

This happened not once, but twice today.

First, the women’s U17 team tied Spain(!) in their Group B European Championship match held at the Pirelli Stadium in Burton (England).  The 0-0 draw (and France’s loss to Germany) means that the lassies still have hope of a place in the semi-finals of the tournament if they can beat France on Monday.  Getting back to that “punching above their weight” idea, Spain may not strike fear in the likes of the USWNT youth squads, but they have won this tournament on two previous occasions.

This hard won point was followed later in the day by an even more impressively won 3 points…

Scotland’s U16 boys met England at Stark’s Park in Kirkaldy tonight in the final of the annual “Victory Shield” match, an almost 90 year old tournament for the teams of the Home Nations (Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland)

In front of an impressive- and rowdy- crowd of 2300+ Scotland were at their best and defeated England 1-0 to secure their first outright Victory Shield since 1998.  Led by goal scorer Calvin Miller (Celtic) Scotland were indeed “rampant” from the first to the last whistle, outclassing their opponents in all areas of the pitch, with performances by Robby McCrorie (Rangers), Leon Jones (Hearts), Alistaire Coote (Dundee United), Theo Archibald (Celtic), and Sean McKirdy (Hearts) also drawing praise.

These are only two matches from two of the youth sides, but the future seems to be out there if only Scotland want to grab it…
