…something happened, sort of. It looks like Dutch forward Darren Maatsen may be one of the unnamed Dutch players I mentioned yesterday. The 6’1″ Maatsen is 22 years old and currently plays on the right wing (or as a secondary striker) for SBV Excelsior in the Netherlands Erste Divisie (second tier). Prior to joining Excelsior he was at VV HVO, FC Dordrecht, and Excelsior Maassluis. He had no goals in 24 appearances this season, but had five in 28 appearances the previous year.
Based on the numbers, it’s kind of hard to hazard a guess as to Maatsen’s quality. Since joining Excelsior he has started about half of their matches and appeared in about 25 a season (out of 30), so he has clearly bee an important part of the first team. Excelsior, however, haven’t been very good lately. They were in the top division as recently as 2011-2012, but last year they finished 15th in an 18 team league. To sum all of that up, a sometime starter on a bad team with a low strike rate.
It should be noted, however, that according to his Twitter pages he is “keepin’ it real in the presence of fakeness.”
Take a look at his highlight reel:
I saw good speed, good dribbling, and a willingness to play a little defense- worth a shot I guess!
