The Platonic Ideal

This is the new Nike Premier.

That’s it, no numbers, no initials, no nickname.

It comes in black with white trim.

That’s it.  No neon, no pattern, no exoskeleton.

It goes on sale July 1.

You should buy a pair just on principle.

According to Nike, the inspiration for this shoe began with their first football boot in 1971, simply called, “The Nike”:

Yup, that's 1971 alright.

Yup, that’s 1971 alright.

I’ll take Nike’s word for it, but for those of us who have been around the soccer block a time or two we know that the real precursor to the new boot was this one:

I miss you so much...

I miss you so much…

This is the 1994/1995 Nike Tiempo Premier.  Along with the Umbro Pelé Supreme of the same era this is quite simply the best outdoor boot I’ve ever owned.  Narrow fit, kangaroo leather, neither a bell nor a whistle to be found.  How much did I like these?  18 years later I still own the studded version (same as above with some royal blue embroidery) which I bought at the same time and they are in perfect condition- I even have the stud wrench that came with them.  I wasn’t the only one who loved these- no less than ten players in the 1994 World Cup wore the Nike Tiempo Premier.  But back to the new boot…

This new Nike Premier is exactly the kind of boot I was talking about a few days ago.  No off-set lacing, no fins, no NIKESKIN upper, just the real, damn, deal.  So, while I appreciate the new technology (this boot actually uses the same last as the new Nike Hypervenom), it is a boot like this that gives me hope for our footballing future…YAY!

(If there is enough demand, “Shoe Porn” may become a regular feature.)

Yes please. Not sure what could top those Pantofola d’oros, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying.
