Where is WeeFuse?
With no Ross County match scheduled until next Friday night against Dundee United F.C. I have taken the opportunity to travel hundreds of miles away from my home base. Specifically, to in Fredericksburg, VA. This post went up at 10am EST, or about halfway through the F.O.R.D. (Fredericksburg Off-Road Duathlon) in which I, and my best friend, Dan, are competing. The F.O.R.D. is part of the Virginia Off-Road Series which is, as its name suggests, a multi-race competition. Dan an I will only be taking part in this race for reasons to obvious to require explanation here, but I will give you a hint: we’re old.
This morning Dan and I will be competing in the team division which means he will run a 2.5 mile cross country course, I will ride an 8-10 mile mountain bike course, and then Dan will run another 2.5 mile course. I think I speak for both of us when I say that we have three goals:
- Do not get hurt.
- Finish.
- Win our age group (40-49, male)
I am happy to say that if we can accomplish the first two goals the third may actually be possible. The main problems facing us will be that we will not know anything about the course until we’re actually on it and, at least in my case, if it’s hot and humid on race morning I’ll just be looking to survive. Should we finish (actually, we probably don’t have to…) we’ll be treated to copious amounts of food and drink courtesy of F.O.R.D., and a free t-shirt. We’ll also know that, at least for another year, that we are still viable members of our gender. This is probably more important for me as Dan is already married and has two children and no longer has much to prove.
Finally, should this be the end for me I can only hope that I went out in an explosion of sprockets, gravel, and blood somewhere on the trail and not sobbing quietly on a cot in the medical aid tent…
