New England Revolution 0 – 0 Philadelphia Union

Whatever you say, Norman.

Having some weeks ago made my peace with the fact that the New England Revolution’s season is effectively over (i.e., they will not make the playoffs) there seems little point in being negative about the club’s performance over the rest of the season. The fact that they will not make the playoffs says all that needs to be said in terms of “negativity.” So, going forward, I’m going to do my best to highlight the positive things I see in each Revolution- right after I get one last thing off of my chest.

Saer Sene- who recently became the first Revolution player to score 10+ league goals since Taylor Twellman accomplished the feat in 2007- has been lost for the season with a torn ACL. A torn ACL which he suffered without any contact…except for his feet…with the FieldTurf. Need I go on?  Soccer-specific stadium…with real grass…now!

Alright, now to the positive stuff from the Revolution’s 0-0 draw with the Philadelphia Union.

  • The club kept a clean sheet.
  • Goalkeeper Matt Reis played very well in earning the shutout.
  • Defender Darius Barnes, who hasn’t been seen much in the last two seasons, played very well and made a case for further inclusions in the starting 11.
  • Flo Lechner, also making his first start on the back line in many a moon, had a solid game as well.
  • Diego Fagundez justified the start given to him by coach Jay Heaps, but he probably isn’t ready to go 90 minutes just yet.
  • With 25 points in the bank, the Revolution still have a good chance to surpass last year’s total of 28. A point a match in their remaining contests will bring them to an even 30.

The Revolution will be in action next on Wednesday when they welcome the Columbus Crew to Gillette Stadium.
